Record Donation by Hawkesbury Panthers

December 13 - Hawkesbury Panthers Sporting Club today made one of the largest single donations in its history - a cheque for $30,000 (thirty thousand dollars) to the San Miguel Family Centre at Kurmond.

The money will be used to finance a bus that provides families at the centre with essential transport.

"This is one of our biggest donations ever," said Hawkesbury Panthers chairman Laurie Duffy in handing over the cheque to the acting director of San Miguel, Brother Dominic Della Bosca. The Hawkesbury club was in some financial difficulties before amalgamation with Panthers earlier this year.

"We have always managed to meet our community responsibilities," Mr Duffy said, "but the amalgamation with Panthers has made a big difference."

San Miguel is run by the de la Salle Brothers and helps the homeless, particularly families with children. Many are refugees from violence.  It aims to provide them with life skills, restore their self esteem and assist them in finding permanent accommodation.

Brother Dominic said the donation would "help us to help homeless people in the Hawkesbury and Penrith areas.  We are grateful to Hawkesbury Panthers and look forward to a viable relationship with them that lasts for years."

Hawkesbury MP Kevin Rozzoli described San Miguel as "one of the most important organisations" of its kind in the area - "its work is absolutely vital.  I would like to thank Hawkesbury Panthers for their generosity in helping these families."

Councillor Rex Stubbs, Mayor of Hawkesbury, said: ""This donation is quite important given the geographical spread of our region.

"The bus will help to transport San Miguel residents to various government and commercial facilities throughout the Hawkesbury region."
